Getting your property ready for colder weather

October 2026 · Monthly newsletter

General guidance for October 2026. Images are illustrative, not photographs of our clients or completed work.

As the days get shorter, small property problems can become harder to ignore. This October edition focuses on spotting issues early and planning maintenance before colder weather puts extra pressure on your home or building.

Start with heating and ventilation

If heating is unreliable, radiators are not warming as expected or a boiler is displaying a fault, arrange an assessment rather than attempting a repair yourself. Gas work must be carried out by a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer.

Condensation can become more noticeable when windows stay closed. Keep ventilation openings clear and report recurring damp, leaks or mould so the underlying cause can be investigated. Painting over a stain is not a substitute for fixing the problem.

Walk around the outside

Look for signs of water entering around windows, damaged exterior finishes and blocked drainage. Observe from ground level and leave work at height to suitable professionals. A photograph and a clear description help the maintenance team understand what needs attention.

  • Check that paths and communal entrances are clear of leaves and obstructions.
  • Report loose fittings, damaged fencing and water pooling near the building.
  • Make a list of unfinished repairs before booking decorating or remedial works.

Keep occupied spaces comfortable

Cleaning, gardening and repairs work best when they are coordinated. For landlords and shared buildings, agree access with residents and identify which areas need attention first. Explain any disruption in advance, especially where someone needs additional support.

Complete Support Property Maintenance offers electrical, gas, remedial, gardening, painting, decorating and cleaning services. Contact the team to discuss the condition of your property and the right scope of work; availability and costs are confirmed individually.

This month's takeaway

Prioritise safety, investigate the cause and plan repairs before cosmetic improvements.
