Choosing home care that fits the person

Arranging care can involve unfamiliar decisions. This September edition explains how to prepare for a conversation about home care and keep the individual's wishes at the heart of that discussion.
Start with the person's priorities
Ask what matters most: staying at home, maintaining a morning routine, preparing meals or feeling more confident with everyday tasks. Needs and preferences can be different, so both should be discussed.
Bring information about existing support and any relevant professional advice to the assessment. Share it with the person's consent or through an appropriate authorised representative, rather than assuming a family relationship automatically gives permission.
Ask practical questions
A useful care conversation covers what support is proposed, how visits fit the person's routine, how costs are explained and how the plan can be reviewed. Complex needs require careful assessment rather than a standard package.
- What tasks would be included in the agreed care plan?
- How are changes in needs or missed arrangements communicated?
- Who should the person or family contact with a concern?
- How will consent, dignity and personal preferences be respected?
Review rather than set and forget
Care arrangements should be revisited when circumstances change. A hospital stay, a change in mobility or a different household routine may affect what support is appropriate.
INT Care Solutions is a CQC-regulated care business offering domiciliary, complex and cancer care. Speak with the team about an individual assessment and confirm the suitability, scope, availability and cost of any proposed care before making arrangements.
This month's takeaway
The best starting point is a personal assessment, not a one-size-fits-all timetable.
